New US Ambassador Arrives in Argentina

Buenos Aires, November 4, 2025 – Total News Agency-TNA– The new Ambassador of the United States to Argentina, Peter Lamelas, arrived this Monday in Buenos Aires to officially assume his post and present his credentials to Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno, and subsequently to President Javier Milei.

His arrival marks the beginning of what both governments call a “stage of maximum rapprochement” in bilateral relations. Lamelas was nominated by Donald Trump on March 24 of this year, and his ratification by the US Senate was finalized on September 18. However, both Milei and his team emphasize that Lamelas's arrival goes beyond declarations and is part of a more pro-US foreign relations strategy.

In his first statement, Lamelas affirmed that his mission will be to “align the interests of the United States and Argentina and strengthen the bilateral alliance,” while defining that a “moment of cooperation at the highest level” is beginning.

Foreign Minister Quirno, for his part, gave the official welcome and highlighted that the diplomat's presence “reinforces the common commitment” of both countries to investments, foreign trade, defense, and international cooperation.

In his confirmation hearing before the US Senate, Lamelas outlined shared political goals with Milei, such as limiting China's influence in Latin America and ensuring “democratic institutionalism” in the region.

Lamelas's arrival also presents challenges: he must demonstrate that his position is not just a result of personal affinities but will contribute to concrete results in bilateral cooperation.

The designation is part of a Washington strategy aimed at strengthening personal ties with the Casa Rosada and aligning the bilateral relationship with Argentina's new governance.

His profile is not discreet. He is a Cuban-American businessman and physician who founded a network of urgent care clinics in Florida, with no prior diplomatic experience.

On the economic front, the ambassador's company, Sur Finanzas, will be inspected by multiple diplomatic and commercial actors, given the link between business, politics, and diplomacy that his appointment represents.

The Embassy of the United States also indicates that Argentina should be considered a “partner of choice” for Washington in the region.

The arrival of Lamelas coincides with a strategic moment in the relationship between the two countries. The coincidence of Milei and Trump at this week's America Business Forum in the United States adds prominence to Lamelas's diplomatic debut.

His statements have generated critical reactions in Argentine provinces and from the government of Buenos Aires, which accused him of interference in internal affairs.

The Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed on its social networks: “Welcome Ambassador Peter Lamelas!”. The Casa Rosada trusts that Lamelas's arrival will help to make progress in North American investment aimed at reactivating strategic Argentine sectors, such as energy, logistics, and technology.
